There are two articles on slashdot today using "1984" and "Orwellian" to describe some new developments. I wonder what's going on - is it simply paranoia, or is it a harbinger of things to come?

I think that by writing 1984, George Orwell may have prevented the state of affairs of our world from devolving to that of Oceania. It has probably ( Read more... )

If you know the future, it's not going to happen. ;-)

Asimov thinks otherwise in his foundations series, though. The masses tend to be lead than think on their own. So if a leader says "We are going to go into an economic slump, let's work hard, produce more, blah"... people will do it. But yeah, what you say is correct... the very prediction that we are going to go into an economic slump won't happen because people reacted against it.
