So you don't get the permalink to the post you are looking for although you may see snippets of it in the summary with the Google result.
Sorry for going off-the-topic but you could select the cached link and find out the permalink.
Sometimes, I end up using the 'left' and 'right' arrow icons on a given entry to navigate ;/ More painful than searching through a real physical diary ;/
Nope. The cached link is just how your page looked on a certain date. It doesn't give you a *permalink*. Also, the cache gets update and Google doesn't maintain many copies of the cached pages. I suppose it's just for redudancy incase the original server is down. In a search on my journal I could see what I was looking for the in the blurb of the search result, but the cached link was showing me something much more recent, although not the most recent.
There is something called ljbook.com where you just have to give your userid and it will fetch your entire (right from the start) lj entries, including comments and convert it to a PDF. you can keep the PDF and use the search function given in the Acrobat reader 7.0 or try to get the code or api used in ljbook.com and build your own search.

It worked beautifully. :-)
Although this still doesn't address my archiving and backup concern.
