Office Hours [Thursday]

Aug 02, 2007 08:23

Umbridge's office is noticeably devoid of any kitten plates. Yes, she could magic them back but she wants to see if the culprit steps forward and accepts responsibility for their actions.

The tea is cold on her desk, her wand is in plain view and she does not look happy.

Anne had finally finished the Barry Plodder books -- several times over -- and had moved on to the Twilight is Ascending sequence.

It had, perhaps, been a bad idea to introduce her to modern young adult fantasy literature, as she was spending even more time reading and daydreaming than usual. One might get the distinct impression that she was reading and daydreaming to the detriment of her studies . . . never mind that she only had one workshop on Monday and one on Friday.

At any rate, there was a pale, freckled, redheaded girl meandering very slowly down the hallway past Umbridge's office, a book clutched to her chest and a dreamy, almost vacant expression on her face.

Umbridge looked up and felt her blood pressure skyrocket. "Another one!" That was said loud and without any sort of attempt to muffle.

"Oh, yes," said Anne vaguely, giving a rapturous sigh as she imagined what it would be like to stumble across an ancient treasure from Arthurian times. "There are four more books after this in the series."

Sometimes it was very hard to pull her back out of dreamland.

[OOC: WTF I did not get this comment notification. Also off to work now, blargh, back in about five hours.]

"What is your name?" Umbridge asked sharply.

That tone of voice proved to be enough to snap Anne out of her reverie, and her cheeks flushed as she drew herself up and looked at Umbridge. "Anne Shirley," she said, a touch of haughtiness creeping into her own voice. "Anne spelt with an e."

She eyed Anne suspiciously. "Shirley? Are you telling me the truth?"

"Of course I'm telling you the truth," cried affronted Anne. "I may be an orphan, but I've no reason to be ashamed of my parents!"

"You have the look...of a Weasley!" Umbridge accused hotly.

The name, of course, meant nothing to Anne, but there was no mistaking the derision that accompanied it. She could only assume (and, to a point, correctly) that it was a slight against that ever-sensitive subject, her red hair.

"How dare you!" she cried, too indignant to remember her manners or, for that matter, to care. "You look exactly like a -- a -- pot-bellied stove!"

[OOC: And I can't remember if I tagged into the original plotterywheel thread or not, but please feel free to bust her for this.]

This school was beginning to rival Hogwarts in students that she despised. She stood up slowly.

"What did you say, dear child?"

Bad enough that the new principal reminded her of Mr. Phillips, but to insult her hair as well was just too much for Anne's temper.

"I don't like you," she said, clutching her book defiantly to her chest as some small part of her was appalled at how she was addressing a teacher. That part, however, was quite soundly overruled by the part of her that . . . well, had a redhead's temper. "I think it's disgraceful for teachers to insult their students this way, and I think your methods of keeping order are absolutely dreadful."

Anne had not yet been disabused of her overly idealistic notions of what teaching should be.

"You speak freely," she observed, lips twisting cruelly. Her wand was in her hand within seconds. "You have hair like a Weasley. Perhaps, dear child, you'd like more of it?"

And there was a muttered curse, a brief flash and Anne would find the Hair Thickening Charm working it's magic on her hair and eyebrows.

[Moddable spell! Length and severity is up to you yay!]

Anne shrieked, her book crashing to the floor as her head suddenly felt about three times as heavy as usual. "You ought to be ashamed of yourself, you -- you horrible old toad!" she sputtered in horror.

Stooping long enough to retrieve the book -- and nearly overbalancing in the process -- she turned and fled.
