I made a shawl

Dec 30, 2008 12:01

A couple of days ago I finished one of the shawls I've been working on. It turned out pretty good, and I think I might actually have some use for it. It's warm and snuggly, and nice to pull around my shoulders when I'm just hanging out at home.

This shawl seems to be made out of win and warmth! = double win! It looks really comfy.

:D And let's not think about the fact that it's a total old lady piece of clothing.

*looks* *ponders* *doesn't get it* HOW did you knit that? It's clearly not "woven", but you've knitted it in one go, but... err... how? The direction of the knitting changes at every square, so did you knit one square, pick the stitches on one side and knit another square there? But how did you continue from there?

It's BEAUTIFUL!!!

You figured out about half of it. :) The technique is called entrelac and once you get the hang of it, it's actually a lot simpler than it looks. Here's a pretty good tutorial that shows how it's done in steps.

Well, after you've done those things a couple hundred times they're not exactly difficult anymore. ;) Now, the annoying thing is that since you knit one tiny rectangle at a time, you have to turn the work a lot. Knit ten stitches, turn, purl ten stitches, turn, knit ten stitches... And the more you knit the heavier the thing gets.

That's quite pretty... I have a weird thing about shawls. I sort of like them, but would never actually wear one... that one actually looks pretty and warm though.

Thank you! I don't really wear shawls either. They're just too unpractical. Sometimes I wrap it around my shoulders when I sit in front of the computer, but that's not very often. Mostly it's just hanging on the back of a chair. Um, I suppose I could call it a weird kind of decoration. :)
