Congrats!! Sounds like things are going fabulous!!
I do have to ask though... retarded? You cannot use that word around here with someone gasping. It's become a totally derogatory word.... it has been replaced with "people with special needs".
I totally agree and in training they did say today some of the people we care for have gotten in changed but has yet to completely take over. It's an organizartion that was first founded in 1952 by a few families with children who had disabilities. And thank God they stood up and did something. It has overtaken the State Institutions that sadly was where many adults spent years in being neglected. Anyways, the term has stuck in a diagnostic light too. Each person has been given a plan in which a diagnosis was made at one point and medically the word retarded has stuck. However in the real world, I and everyone whom I've worked with avoids the "r" word as MUCH as possible. They are members of the community, they are our brothers, our sisters, friends and have rights. They are more intelligent than MOST people realize or care to know.
My cousin worked at a home for special needs adults as well, and she LOVED every minute of it. She said that because they don't pick up on certain societal views, that they are the most compassionate, loving people and that the thoughts they have are so pure and truly *thoughtful*.
