CHARACTER
Name: Naoya
Age: 24
Canon: Devil Survivor
History: Where to begin? In canon, Naoya is the reincarnation of Cain-yes, that Cain. He was cursed, not just to wander the barren land east of Eden, but to be reincarnated, with his memories intact, never to escape the weight of his sin. Naturally, the man is quite a bit bitter and angry about things like religion and God. Mostly God. Believing his curse to be unjust, he has spent…a while plotting his revenge against the almighty. It is his current incarnation that has come up with a way that might work, both in killing God and lifting his curse.
Naoya was hired by a group of religious fanatics, the Shomonkai, to create a computer program that would allow for easy summoning of demons. Normally, summoning would take a ritual and a great amount of will, but this program would allow anyone to summon…and weaken the barrier between the demon world and the human one. The aim of this? To start the war of Bel, that a King of Bel, ruler of all demons, might arise and become the new almighty being. Naoya succeeded, creating the Demon Summoning Program…which began the chain of events leading to a lockdown of all Tokyo.
In this Lockdown, Naoya had arranged for his young cousin to be inside the Yamanote circle in Tokyo, and trapped, along with everyone else. This cousin-coincidentally, a reincarnation of Abel, although he knew it not-was the only human capable of becoming King of Bel. Naoya aimed to make the boy become king…and wage war on God.
With only a week in the Lockdown before all in it were killed, Naoya had to nudge his cousin into becoming very powerful…very quickly. On the fifth day, after the teenager had defeated a friend gone mad with a thirst for ‘justice’ (a laughable concept; God was not just, so humans were not capable of it), Naoya tested his cousin’s strength...and was satisfied. The next morning, he told his cousin of his plan to make him overlord and free humanity from God’s influence…and waited for his cousin’s decision.
Should his cousin, truly his younger brother, choose to become the king of Bel, Naoya would have his final revenge, turning God’s most beloved child against Him to slay him. And to tell the truth, Naoya planned for other outcomes--if his cousin chose to take his best friend’s plan of bending demons to his will, Naoya could simply wait and start over...after all, he had all the time in the world, didn’t he? He expected Abel to be smart enough not to follow God’s plan and become a tyrant Messiah...but he’d killed him before, he could do it again.
Naoya’s actions rested on his cousin’s decision, but no matter what he chose...Naoya’s vengeance would only, at best, be delayed for another few centuries. History repeated itself, after all.
(As a note, the end of the history is left vague because of multiple endings in-game...since which ending doesn’t matter overmuch for a game of this nature, I didn’t pick one. XD; )
Personality:
Naoya is, in a word, a dick. Consumed by his hatred for God and refusal to bow down and repent for slaying his younger brother, the man will stop at nothing to gain his revenge for a punishment he perceives as unjust. Manipulative to the very last, Naoya does not seem to connect with people. Perhaps he’s seen too much tragedy in all his numerous incarnations, or perhaps he’s just a complete social retard who hasn’t had healthy, normal connections with people in over a couple hundred years, you decide. Naoya is…generally fairly calm and collected, and excels in being cryptic and not really letting on the whole story to anything. He doesn’t particularly lie often-although when he does, he does well-but he’s not going to tell you anything more than what he needs to get what he wants. However…the man does have a temper, and bringing up God’s mercy, love, or justice is a surefire way to piss him off. Pointing out the holes in his own logic or his shortcomings also do pretty well. If you’re an angel, or are friends with one? Consider yourself permanently on his shitlist.
Running along with Naoya’s intense hatred for God is a subtle thread of self-loathing. He does believe that Abel, his darling brother…should hate him for what he’s done, if he knew about it. This may be the only sign of his remorse, although it’s fleeting, and Naoya would never acknowledge such, chosing to focus more on his anger over God’s blatant favoritism. He’s an extremely intelligent man, if completely insane, and he’ll stop at absolutely nothing to achieve his goal.
But this is not all there is to Naoya, no! His age has warped his interactions with people, and while it’s much easier to have people write you off as simply a bastard, simply selfish, anything simple, Naoya is a complex, twisted man. It isn’t that he isn’t capable of liking or respecting people, or even incapable of remorse--he is, but his pride is too strong for him to ever admit to that regret, or apologize for it--since of course, he’s never entirely the one at fault. Naoya’s odd brand of compassion is also of note--he knows he does terrible things, he doesn’t really care that they’re terrible, and it doesn’t really matter who he hurts--but if he’s wronged someone, he’s not above giving them the keys to closure, at least. He won’t directly help someone unless it helps him, but a nudge here and there...well, he can make most things work to his benefit, that’s all.
IN GAME
Brief In-Game History: Naoya wasn’t anyone important, and that’s why he was taken. His parents, who were simply a Japanese couple on vacation in the wrong part of Italy, died when he was no older than 4, and he was taken in without much fuss, despite having family still alive in Japan. “Disappeared” was a better word, and noises were made about how tragic it was, but it wasn’t uncommon, happened all the time, these sorts of kidnappings, and there was no use hunting for him, just for a body...if they were lucky.
Naoya should have been so lucky to have gotten off that easily. Being kidnapped by the Mendolia family was bad enough, but they were interested in a new kind of experiment, and a pale orphan with no connection to anyone on this side of the world was just one of many they pulled for this. For some enterprising soul had thought that perhaps, the skills of the dead--their training and memories--could be put to good use if they could be injected back into a living human. What information could be gleaned from someone who’s memories stretched back farther than their own simple life? And if they could unlock lives and secrets from much farther back than the recent dead...
It could have been called necromancy, if Naoya had known the word. But he didn’t, and all he knew was all the others who had been found suitable for the combination of bullets they Mendolia used died terribly under the weight of the memories of the dead--and that his own mind was warped, broken, and twisted by memories that came and went, his but not his. But it worked, he survived, he knew things, things he wasn’t old enough to understand, trapped under the operating table.
But the experiments were deemed to take too many resources--it was far too much trouble to gather the fragments needed to give a single boy memories from ages long past, particularly since it only lasted for a brief period, and had killed most of the subjects. Deemed an inefficient weapon, Naoya was cast aside--turned loose into the streets of Vittoria, a half-dead man who was only barely 17 and insane, without weapons or knowledge of his own, only the bullets used on him, that he’d stolen from the labs. Without a gun, what use were they? They expected him to die out there.
But he didn’t. Naoya had sworn a curse, burning with the madness the bullets gave him, and he would not allow himself to die before he enacted his revenge...not on the Mendolia, or any mafia family, but on the distant God that lay responsible for all creation. Naoya vanished, hitchhiking, stealing and other unmentionable activities in order to get to Palermo. Whatever it took, no matter the cost, and if he sometimes took to calling himself ‘Cain’ in his fevered nightmares, there was no one there to listen.
He began working on the road to Palermo--he was pale, and tall, and his blood-red eyes made him stand out in any crowd, but Naoya could be patient, and he listened to the gossip around him, learned a habit of keeping still and keeping quiet until those around him forgot he was there. He honed his wit and intelligence on a red-hot need for revenge, took up programming and hacking to stay on top of the ever-explanding world of information computers provided, and created a calm, infuriatingly smug persona, focusing only on his goal...but one couldn’t live only for that kind of vengeance, and Naoya turned to manipulating the people around him, first for amusement and then for work. He built himself a name as a man who could get any number of things--usually information, but it was not unknown for him to deal in manipulation and favors--and he proved to be a dangerous and vengeful man if crossed. Naoya quietly and slowly built up the contacts and money to have more of the bullets he used made, and soon those who tried to get rid of a manipulative informant who knew a bit too much found that Naoya was never content with just killing those he felt who had wronged him--he would destroy an entire person’s life around them if he felt he had cause...and assault or attempted murder was quite definitely cause.
Seven years after the Mendolia discarded him as a failed experiment, Naoya still stands alone, bowing his head to no one, and promising no allegiances. Nothing is sacred to him, and his motives are a mystery, but he’ll most likely do whatever job you ask for...just be sure you read the fine print before paying the price he asks.
