I always thought the pronunciation was a Southern thing, perhaps more based on the dialect that was prevalent 100 years ago. But it's still interesting to learn that he's British.

I would agree that it's just a dialect thing, but it's still a little forced. The fact that he's british explains, to me at least, why it's so forced.
