Playing Tichu with minimal instruction has insulated me very nicely from bothering to learn it well. But yay for yarn and the Strand! (I bought materials with which to knit critters, last night. I ain't saying which critters, but I bet you can guess.)
Er, by which I mean that playing Tichu as a beginner wasn't all that great, and I don't particularly feel interested in learning it well enough to enjoy it more and be a good partner. I didn't mean I picked it up quickly, though I can get through a game or at least I could the weekend I learned. I'm sure at some point I'll spend the time learning it better in order to spend time with those who play, but it won't be for the game.
Yes, Tichu as a beginner is middling entertaining- I had to ask Genny and Alisa to eliminate the possible ulterior motive section of the rules. I can't handle strategy and sneakiness yet, and I'm not sure I'll ever have to. I only plan on playing when a fourth person is needed or I'm tired of sitting around reading and ripping out my knitting while the others are playing. Very wary of possible addictions, I am
