Personality: Titled the “mysterious Deja-vu Boy” by protagonist Maya Amano in Eternal Punishment, it’s obvious from the start that there’s more to this red-clad eighteen-year-old boy than meets the eye. Most encounters with him involve a brief moment where he laments his own existence, right before he tells the main party, in a nice way, to leave him alone. Obviously not the best impression, but at least it’s a constant occurrence. Throughout the game, Tatsuya’s motivations and actions are a constant puzzle to the main party. Later on, however, the reasons for his distant nature are revealed.

Prior to the events of Eternal Punishment, Tatsuya was the protagonist of Innocent Sin, the prequel. To put it simply, Bad Things Happened and in a last minute decision to undo the events that transpired, Tatsuya and his friends resigned themselves to forgetting everything that happened in exchange for the creation of a parallel universe. Unfortunately, even the promise of peaceful days does not seem like a sufficient exchange. Unwilling to forget about everything, Tatsuya backs out of the deal the last minute. His memories are only very thinly concealed; he soon recalls everything that happened, and the alternate world his friends earned from the sacrifice of their memories soon becomes unravelled as a result of his “innocent sin”. Feeling guilty for ultimately being the catalyst for the series of events, and unable to request assistance from the other amnesiacs (he ran the risk of messing things up even more), Tatsuya resigns himself to fixing things alone.

Tatsuya’s ultimately an introvert. He’s not the type of guy who’ll give you a whole motivational speech about your problems as listening is more his style. This nature is stemmed from a combination of factors: events in his childhood that caused him to retreat into himself, and an affinity to summon his “Persona”, a manifestation of his inner self, at times of danger. This uncontrollable power caused major injuries to other people, and the obvious solution was distance... So Tatsuya distanced himself from others. This apparently “apathetic” attitude makes him seem cold-hearted, aloof, and kind of badass to outsiders, but this is hardly the case. Even throughout Eternal Punishment, Tatsuya is mainly only “cool” in his silence. His social skills aren’t amazing and honestly? He’s slightly awkward sometimes.

While conversing with Tatsuya, don’t expect anything more than ellipses and short sentences. He’ll refer to you by last name as a means of emotionally distancing himself; although he is a nice guy, it’s just difficult to get him to open up. Tatsuya’s often off doing his own thing; skipping class, part-time jobs, so he’s not the kind of person to adhere to other people’s restrictions. This “Lone Wolf” attitude is apparent even in Eternal Punishment, where Tatsuya continues to try to fix things alone, even after things begin going astray. Having him disclose the events of the past was an ardeous task, even for Maya, who Tatsuya is very close to. Actually, perhaps it’s because Maya is so close to him that he tried his hardest to make sure she didn’t get involved in the entire mess again. In some instances he keeps people at arm's length to protect them--in other instances he pushes people away because he just doesn't know how to deal with some situations.

Tatsuya's not a stiff person or anything like that. He's actually quite casual in both speech and attitude, when he does talk, anyway, and people gravitate towards him even though he's not a social butterfree (see what I did there). His affiliated arcana is "The Sun" (representing understanding, and other positive traits, though his interpretation might be more likely the reversed sun, which shows immaturity), and though he doesn't purposefully take the leadership role, he sometimes just fits right into that niche. A kind of "pseudo-leader", if you will. This isn't as apparent in his role in the party in Eternal Punishment, where Maya is the main character, but he does push the group in a certain direction with his knowledge of the parallel worlds. Alongside some of the other characters, Tatsuya seems more developed and perhaps more mature, but putting him beside adults emphasizes the more childish aspects of his character.

He's not cold-hearted... just quiet and slightly distant. He's kind but not obviously so--and in the end, like most people, he cares a lot about the people he's close to, though he expresses it in his own way.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ yay goals Tatsuya's a driven kind of dude. When he's got purpose he'll stick to it, though previously he was unsure about what to do.
+ Dexterous. In Innocent Sin, it's a fact that he's good with machinery.
+ He can hit things with a sword. Yeah, he's good at that.
+ He's good at imitating noises. Like the sound of a motorcycle. But mostly the sound of a motorcycle.
+ ... Tatsuya's loyal, reliable, and a pretty good friend, even if he's not showing it one-hundred percent of the time.
+ Because he's quiet, he's a good listener.

- ... Because he's quiet, he's not good at disclosing his problems. So he can end up taking too much on his own. Which he does. A lot. For an entire game. damnit, tatsuya.
- how does I social? Tatsuya isn't the ideal conversation partner.
- how does I guilt trip. This guy has such issues when it comes to the events of Innocent Sin. If you mention it, he'll awkwardly dance around the topic or just. Not say anything. While angsting some more.
- how does i direction Ultimately, before Eternal Punishment, Tatsuya wasn't really sure about where he was taking his life. This isn't as applicable since he does have a purpose now, but outside of that, there's not much.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample: [there is a slight moment of hesitation before he finally decides to post to the network; though it's simply text.]

Hey. Does anyone know where this is? ... Or, does the name "Sumaru" seem familiar to anyone? It's important. [there's a bit of a pause here, but he continues] Thanks.

[he shuts the pokégear, looking frustrated with himself.]

Maybe this is for the best. But... I can't do anything from here.

Ch. This isn't the time... I have to get back. [he looks down to put away the pokégear; but freezes at the evidence of an audio recording--] They wouldn't be here. [--and he relaxes, slightly, shutting off the audio and making sure there's no other functions turned on, he puts away the pokégear.]

Third Person Sample: There was nothing about the cheery atmosphere that seemed familiar, or even uplifting. The music he could handle; being in a strange place with no direction would be difficult, at first, but finding a way back to Sumaru City wasn’t that difficult (or so he thought). Still-being unable to feel his Persona was not part of the plan, and the fact that it was absent at such a critical time both frustrated him and made all the other problems seem ten times worse.

It started with the whole ‘mom’ thing. That was the first flag. Then the complete disconnection to his Persona-something that should have been there. Then the fact that he had been spirited away from somewhere important, while he was doing something important, and now Tatsuya was left with no idea where to go and a sense of urgency with no direction.

Is this… some kind of trick? His first suspicions went to Philemon, or to Nyarlathotep-but this seemed completely different, and random, that somehow his doubts drifted elsewhere. The entire world was an enigma to him, and he had no clue where to start. Thinking about what to do next was difficult on his own, at least without the benefits of having the memories of a parallel world, and his thoughts drifted to the possibility of how it would be if he was with the group, like before.

--What would Jun do? What would Maya do?

He paused for a moment-and he thought back to Maya’s words. Positive thinking. Yeah. “… Sorry, Maya-nee,” he flicked the cap of his zippo lighter idly, “It’s a little difficult, here.”

Still, he walked idly through town, looking for clues. Opened the backpack to look at the contents. He wasn’t expecting much, honestly, but he had to at least try. He couldn’t rely on them here-it wasn’t an option.
