How flattering with all the references to hell - Annex 8, Annex 8.5 Beware of Hellish Circles. The lift going down to the basement. All the nuances and quirks. 'Blood' orange bonbons. And other things! You are too good.Mornings in Malmaison (the summer cottage) of one Lady Strange were usually quiet affairs. Most lazy summer weekday mornings for her ladyship were spent either on horseback or in an invigorating hike across the downs, checking her investments with the Bank of Hell, checking on her team of geldings and making morning calls on her friends. This morning, however, her ladyship had dressed for riding but eschewed heading out. Hiking up her black pantaloon and be-stockinged feet up in the table, her ladyship’s cravat remained untied at her neck as she tuned to the BBC Radio 3 service on the surface so as not to miss the Ring Cycle instalments. That morning, she had given her staff instructions that she was not at home to anyone. In the lull of the breakfast room, nibbling on croissants and fortified by strong English ( ... )

A sharp and unseen hand knocked him on the back of his head as her ladyship purred lowly, “Mirrors have two functions, Mr Aiba. The first is that it catches the light and sends it back at people. This light is often glaring and sometimes blinding. Surely, you don’t expect to notice when something is glaring them in the fact and potentially blinding them as they promenade on the streets ( ... )

“Compared to those kiddies in the soiree, who has it worse?” she sneered, unfurling the fingers of her balled fist and pulling at the tassel of a cushion, thereby jerking up Aiba by his hair on his end of the line. “You dress up as your wretched mirror man because you think you’re immune from whatever that’s in there. Bah, it isn’t that easy to pretend to be bright, noble and virtuous when you’re not. What gives you the right to masquerade as a light reflecting source like a mirror when you’re nothing but a nebulous blob in the shadows ( ... )

“But sensei…” he gasped when he felt the unseen hand leaving his neck.

“Goodbye for now, Mr Aiba. I will see you if you survive this bout.”

“Sensei, I don’t know what will happen. Shouldn’t you be worried?”

“You’ll be fine,” she said dispassionately, then paused briefly before adding with a devilish chuckle, “or maybe you won’t.”

“Sensei! Sensei!” Aiba cried out over the receiver, but it was too late. Her ladyship had already terminated the connection. There was nothing else for him to do but to mull over her words and make sense of her cryptic utterances.

Having left Mr Aiba to ponder his fate and next course of action, her ladyship transported herself to the surface to meet the next client of the day. This task involved her waiting at a bus stop in rather bucolic surroundings. She would have preferred to materialise on the bus and catch her client off guard. But what would be the point? That would startle the other passengers and devils had sworn an oath to be discreet when manifesting their presence on the surface world. She would have preferred to drive her curricle up to the surface, overtaken the bus and abducted her client for his session. But that was inciting a flashy entrance for no other purpose than to show off. And her ladyship disliked showing off her horses and her equipage. No, she rather wait for the bus to come around and surprise her client this way. It was best to do things the mortal way for the time being. Thus, clad in her black riding pantaloons, black boots, black kid gloves, veiled riding hat, malacca cane white collared blouse and navy blue fitted jacket, she ( ... )

“So you want the old days back even though you know they’ll never come back. That’s why you’re sitting here on an endless bus ride, haunted by the memories of old days and the sounds of that world crashing about your ears,” she ventured dispassionately, looking at the photograph of the band as they grinned at the camera. “Tell me, have you noticed that your mind has become like this bus journey ( ... )

She pulled the strings of the finger clamp and squashed Jun’s fingers together, crushing them to the bone, drawing a sharp hiss of pain from him. “Gotter, German for the plural of ‘God’, and Dammerung, German for ‘nebulousness or haziness’. Together, they mean (1) the fall of the gods, or (2) some kind of momentous, cataclysmic event. You said earlier you felt as though a mist of fear had enveloped you, n’est-ce pas? That’s nebulous fear is your ‘dammerung’, Mr Matsumoto. You produced it when you manufactured the momentous, cataclysmic event of Arashi’s dissolution in 2009. You’ve come a long way since then. Why do you look back ( ... )

As soon as she turned around the bend from the bus stop, her ladyship was pleased to learn that her Cyclops butler had the good sense to send a footman up to the surface with her curricle. It was just the very thing she needed to travel to the University of Tokyo where her next client would be waiting ( ... )

Seemingly as though she had not heard him, Miss Unare addressed Lady Strange, “We came at the wrong time. The morning glories have closed their buds already.”

“A shame the ipomoea tricolour should not be in bloom for us,” affirmed her ladyship as she beckoned for Sho. “Come walk with us, Mr Sakurai. It is a shame to admire these specimens on our own ( ... )

“Atropa comes from the name of one of the Fates, Atropos. She’s the one that cuts the thread of life when it’s all over. The meaning is clear, hein? Eat any part of the plant and your thread of life will be cut,” her ladyship laughed chillingly. “Bella donna is Italian for beautiful lady. Combine Atropa with bella donna and you get the meaning, ‘do not betray a beautiful lady’. An apt warning for you, n’est-ce pas?”

“What do you mean by that?” Sho sputtered, rubbing his brow nervously at this slew of revelation.

Haineko laughed on hearing this and taunted him with a nudge to the ribs and a jibe: “Sly dog, have you a beautiful lady secreted somewhere? Are you going to be a faithless deceiver and betray her?”

“Do that and it will be the end of you,” added Lady Strange, lightly touching one of the berries with a caressing finger. “Atropa belladonna is commonly just called Belladonna. And belladonna in the language of flowers means ‘hush’ and ‘silence’. Betray your beauty and it will be permanent silence for you in death, hein ( ... )
