Leaving Daisuke to mull over his options, Lady Strange ordered the carriage to head towards the Ninomiya residence. It had not been her original intention to call on her secret favourite, but decided that she might as well check on him since she was out. The team of horses, fresh from the exercise took her to the flat in excellent time. Upon instructing the coachman to wait return to hell and wait for her at a restaurant in the First Circle of Hell, she let herself inside Nino’s flat with a snap of her fingers. “There was a bookmark with a branch of leaves and red ‘berries’ that read ‘YEW’ in large roman letters.” Nino poked sullenly at the rabbit and wondered why he didn’t overturn Lady Strange’s decision to order rabbit.

“Taxus baccata, you’ve just described the European Yew. All parts of the tree are poisonous except the red berry-like growths. Birds eat those and disperse the seeds. Egestion of the foliage is lethal. It leads to convulsions, difficulty on breathing, collapse, heart failure and death. It forms the basis of this famous line from John Webster’s Jacobean play, White Devil, which goes, ‘both were strucke dead by that sacred yew, / in that base shallow grave that was their due.’ It’s about a double murder committed by the yew.
