Murakami describes Mexico City very well

This is exactly what Mexico City is like (in my view). Aren´t all places like that, you ask? Isn´t the whole world like that? No(ok. this could be argued but I won´t get into that). And ,plus, The ENTIRE CITY is like this with a very few exceptions. I´m sure there are more cities like this but I haven´t been to them ( Read more... )

By some coincidence i just started reading "Dance, Dance, Dance" and read that passage more than once.
Also i just got back from Mexico City (just a tourist)
I can see what you mean... though I was there too short a time to really be understanding anything around me.

I was with people who are artists. I could tell that they had a drastically different life than say, the people living in the favelas just out side the city. and all the political demonstrations every day showed unrest but also a "getting used to things" attitude. I wasn't sure how to interpret this... i could see the dysfunction of Mexico City but in some ways the dysfunctions seemed like solutions to difficult problems. Like everyone is so used to the dysfunctions that it would be dysfunctional not to be dysfunctional anymore (*tilts head a few degrees*)

i don't expect to form any solid opinion about this... being a tourist one just observes and then goes back home.... but i find what you say about the city interesting!

That´s so cool that you´re reading "Dance, Dance, Dance" too. What a weird coincidence.
yeah, I always wonder what visitors to this city think of it. I can´t imagine what it must be like. But, actually, most people seem to like it, which I really don´t get at all but maybe that´s because I´ve lived here for a really long time. Who knows. I guess the best thing about it is the warmth of the people.
It´s interesting for me too to see your impressions of Mexico City.Definetly much more positive than mine.
