Sam was surprised to find the unfamiliar car in the driveway that evening. Sure, it was a Friday, and guests on a non-work night would seem to be a pretty natural thing, but Eric didn’t usually make plans without him. For me, this story hits rather close to home. My daughter, who is lesbian, has had to deal with a few relaives who were cut from the same cloth as Eric's aunt. As her mother, it's been incredibly painful for me to witness her being first snubbed, then forcefully pushed away, by the people who should be providing her with unconditional love and support -- her father (my ex-husband)included. Because he doesn't approve of the person she chose as her life partner, he has never laid eyes on our beautiful 1-yr-old granddaughter and probably never will. His loss, most definitely, but that still doesn't keep her from hurting....

Anyway, nice handling of a difficult subject. Glad to see that like my daughter, Eric made the right choices....

I'm glad your daughter has you to show her what unconditional love is. Every child deserves it, and it's heartbreaking when foolish people don't give it because of their own insecurities or misguided beliefs.

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them as always.

Wow, this was really powerful. It makes me sad when Eric's fears are validated. But Eric and Sam have the kind of love that can weather the storm. This was really great, thanks.

It's sad that his fears in the movie about being discovered have a basis in reality . . . I hope one day things change and this kind of discrimination is only a memory, though I know that day will be long in coming.
