My favorite Arthurian retelling is Elizabeth E. Wein's The Winter Prince, but it's a pretty unusual take: Medraut-centric, no Merlin figure, and Arthur and his queen are happily married with two children. Probably my favorite version of Medraut, though, and I loooove his half-sister Goewin to pieces.
Rosemary Sutcliff's Sword at Sunset is really interesting, but I have mixed feelings about it. No Merlin again.
I loved Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy when I was a kid, but haven't reread in ages.
I've actually never read any of these books so thank you for the recs! Though I've always wanted to read Stewart's Merlin trilogy.
No Merlin is actually fine. I'm just trying to get a feel of the mythos and figuring out what aspects I can use (or subvert even). I'm kind of stuck in the dilemma of having a stronger modern AU idea but I personally prefer to write stories set in canon. So it's also to see maybe there is something I could use for a canon storyline...or for making parallels to the modern AU.
Yeah that's what I'm getting. It's also the best developed at this point (already an outline and everything). I'm pretty excited about writing! And we can all cheer each other on :)
Yeah, I'm feeling that's what I'll end up writing. The reincarnation aspect I think is mostly my need to tie in the canon somehow. I do want express this this Merlin and Arthur from the show and somehow have that tie in, but I guess we'll see?
Are you planning on participating? I'm kind of amazed at how many people already signed up! And so many of the writers who have moved on to other things are back for the last PL--which I'm really excited about. I think I may have squee'd a bit when I saw certain names :) As you can tell, I'm definitely more vested in the potential future reading at the moment than the writing^^
That was actually something I was thinking, mostly because I wasn't too keen on what they implied in the finale. If I do that, I think he would have magic too (not sure if I'll make him remember). I'm not sure if juxtaposing various other sources of the Arthurian legends will work, but I could juxtapose with canon!Merlin and switch to Arthur's POV in modern times. But I want to make it pretty straightforward for the reader and it seems most people prefer a linear time format so more dilemmas :/
There are maybe a couple more favorite authors I wish who would sign up for my own selfish reasons, but either way August is going to be a complete madhouse. Even if not everyone manages to finish, there are going to be easily over 100 stories from PL. That's just ridiculous in an amazing way :)
And hey, most of the time I feel the same way. I'm a way better reader than a writer too. It's just that sometimes the story I want to read hasn't been written :)
I'm a huge fan of Purcell's semi-opera, King Arthur. HUGE. Because Purcell is a god. There are a couple of full length performances on youtube, one being performed in Czech or Polish or something except for the songs, and that one is unfortunately, better. The Portuguese version's okay, but it felt kind of mean and mocking to me for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe someone forgot the golden age of piracy is over or something, idk. Anyway, it's sublime.
Friending you if that's cool. I need more Merlin writers to slog along with. :)
