There Could Be Much Said for Procrastination (mostly Merlin Recs)
So instead of writing for PL, I've been procrastinating mostly by slowly catching up on Elementary and reading fics.
Quick Fandom things of interest:
Trek
There are surprisingly two K/S Big Bangs this year! One is in it's second year ksbigbang and allows TOS, AOS, and RPF. The second one is a brand new one, thyla_bigbang which focuses on TOS.
And of course there's the always fabulous startrekbigbang, which will be starting up post the new film and the one I'm hoping to participate in. But unfortunately, trekreversebang will not be happening this year---which is one fest that I was really looking forward to in participating again this year. But I'm working on two fics that are art inspired so hopefully I'll get those posted soon? Um, possibly in the next two months if I manage my time somewhat wisely?
Also...it's depressing that most of Trek fandom has shifted to Tumblr...
Merlin
There are currently two ongoing Merlin fests at the moment that have been posting. One is the merlin_art_fest, where there's been tons of amazing art. I'm slowly making my way through but will hopefully post a rec post later... But there's a lot of great art so go, be dazzled and comment :)
The other fest is of course camelotremix (here are some quick recs):
Little Steps (The "It Started Out Like This..." Remix) by "anonymous" (Bradley/Colin, 1921, PG-13, Merlin RPF)
And yes I'm a hypocrite and biased because I never thought I would read much less rec Merlin RPF...but Little Steps (The "It Started Out Like This..." Remix) is so well-written that I can't not mention it here. Nuanced details that perfectly capture each emotional beat---that's exactly what the writer does here. The story starts from the first time the actors met on the sets and goes from there. It takes a writer of great skill to take me out of my comfort zone and make me enjoy something that I've been ambivalent about. Also, I've always been a fan of her artwork and the piece for this is gorgeously hot (but NSFW).
Night Sky Changing Overhead (The Brighter We Come Remix) by anonymous (M/A, 5388, NC-17, historical!Edwardian!AU)
I almost didn't read this fic this morning and planned on saving it for later but I love historical settings so I caved---and I'm so glad that I did! There's something about pining and having the courage to say what you feel about someone...and somehow Merlin finds the courage to do just that. What a beautiful fic, which in essence is a first-time story involving a bath but the writing is what elevates this into something more. There is such vivid imagery that feels almost surreal at moments, so much unresolved tension between Arthur and Merlin that you can feel it. And it is super-hot.
A Heap of Broken Images (a digital life remix) by anonymous (M/A--gen, 1395, G, modern/reincarnation!AU)
Arthur finds a picture...and that makes him think of home... Wonderfully written...sparse but with such tangible emotion...and as I said in my comment...it's poignant in a completely understated way. Also definitely check out the original fic this remixed, Imperfect Picture by qwerty---which is also both heartbreaking and hopeful all at once.
And one non-fest related rec:
Faded Epitaphs (Marching Onwards) by patria_mori (M/A, 37079, R, canon/modern!AU)
This was such a well-written fic with such an interesting take on the immortality trope and the use of various Arthurian legends. It's based off a fanvid, There Are Legends by ras_elased and does a fantastic job incorporating scenes from the vid. Arthur ends up being the one who is immortal and he waits for Merlin over the centuries running into various incarnations of people he once knew but never Merlin. There are some lovely characterizations, an interesting guest appearance, pining!, classical/literature/Arthurian references galore, and destiny and sacrifice coming full circle.
And if anybody is interested...it seems like there are a bunch of unclaimed prompts at merlin_muses. I'm eying one or two of them but I don't know if I have time...but you can claim one until April 15th!
In other news?
I may be shipping Captain Marvel with War Machine...I mean can you imagine how amazing Carol and Rhodey would be together?
Also my current Tumblr dashboard is mostly all about Vikings and it's been a little hard not to fall down that rabbit hole...someone needs to talk me out of it...
