William had a fever. I couldn't tell how high, but he was terribly hot in my arms and when I kissed his forehead, I could just tell. The heat coming off him was incredible. I couldn't get him to latch on and nurse for more than a minute. When he wasn't sleeping fitfully, he was fussy...or crying. I hadn't had any rest the night before and it was ( Read more... )

"Hello, Vala," Daniel said without looking up from his paperwork. He was sprawled out on the bed and had several (or two) papers to read over. It was funny having Alcuin as one of his students. Funny in the way that vaguely reminded him of when they'd co-taught French.

He frowned a little when he heard William's fussing, but maybe she was just looking for someone to watch him for a little while. He could do that. "What can I do for you?"

"Feel his head," I demanded. It wasn't really necessary for anyone with eyes to tell that the baby was ill. He was flushed and flailing...but sometimes Daniel wasn't the most observant person I'd ever met.

"He's sick. I think he's sick. You're a doctor...do something."

Daniel glanced up when she started talking about sick and he frowned. "I'm not that kind of doctor, Vala," he said, although he knew she knew that. He pushed the papers to side and patted the bed next to him. "If he's sick, we should take him to the Compound." We, not you. He felt as much of a responsibility for William as for Vala.

I dutifully joined him, carefully cradling my son. He was fussing- flailing and snuffling and rooting for my breast only to turn away in frustration.

"We had a bad night last night, but he wasn't hot like this," I said, ashamed at how weak I sounded. I was worried, though...I think a little weakness was to be expected.
