Long, endless hours and nights of study. After AP theory in 10th grade, I just kept reading and learning more advanced theory, A suggested reading list would include at the very least:
The Harvard Dictionary of Music
20th Century Harmony (Victor Persechetti)
Theory of Harmony (Arnold Schoenberg)
The Jazz Piano Book (Mark Levine)
The Jazz Theory Book (Mark Levine)
...at least as far as theory goes. I've read each of these cover to cover many many times. Thats why I know stuff. As far as actual music literature goes, just listen listen listen, I'm sure your school has a music library. Check out music, and check out scores, and read along with them while you listen to the music.
