dunno about you guys in the down under...but here in the states, they were two different things. a magna-doodle was a board with an attached magnetic pen where you could draw all over the thing and it pulled up tiny magnetic dust particles to create your drawing, and then to erase it, there was a knob that you would slide back and forth across the bottom of the board that got rid of everything, as opposed to shaking it vigorously like you would with the etch-a-sketch. and the etch-a-sketch had two knobs on the bottom corners of the board, one for vertical lines and the other for horizontal.

so yeah, two different toys, and i loved both of them :)

Seconded--they are definitely do different things in the states.
