Then there's John Merrick's quiet, dignified, death at the end of The Elephant Man.
For me, though, the big one is the end of Au Revoir les Enfants.

In the 'coming close' department, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles comes to mind, possibly because it's so seemingly incongruous.
