Wake-up Songs and other mood-makers

Nov 15, 2007 08:26

Alright all my musically-inclined friends (umm...I think that's all of you)

What's the best song to play....

1)  first thing in the morning as you're waking up?

2)  when you're shedding a stressful day?

3)  to make you happy?

4)  during the holidays?

5)  to put you "in the mood"?

6)  to play before you go to sleep?

I'm looking forward to your responses!

Why Must We Always Choose One? that_red_girl November 15 2007, 16:47:08 UTC
1) first thing in the morning as you're waking up? -- Bif Naked "I Love Myself Today"
2) when you're shedding a stressful day? -- Rage Against the Machine "Bulls on Parade" always works, as does most of NIN early work... that is if it's angry stress. Otherwise I'll hit up the Buddha Bar series for some relaxation
3) to make you happy? -- this is a long list and it depends on the day: MIA "Boyz", Liz Phair "Rocket Boy", Shiny Toy Guns "Disko", Mika "Lollipop", Blondie "Call Me", Ben Harper "Steal My Kisses" (live version is best), Elastica "Stutter"
4) during the holidays? -- Manhattan Transfer's version of "Walkin in a Winter Wonderland"
5) to put you "in the mood"? -- Portishead, self-titled album in its entirety
6) to play before you go to sleep? -- Handel's Water Music, particularly the 4th movement

Interesting. I totally love Portishead, but I can't necessarily see using it for "mood" music unless it somehow has connotations for you outside of the music itself. It has the right energy, but not the right emotion, imho.

Like Erin, I'm going to have a hard time picking just one item for any of these questions ( ... )

ok, for most of these i'm having a hard time thinking of specific songs...but maybe it's because lately i've only really listened to music in the car...

2. to show my inner-dork, just about any song from wicked works for me to vent out and release stress.

3. simon and garfunkle's "mrs. robinson" or "celia"

4. anything by transsiberian orchestra

6. pachabel's canon, though i can't think of the specific version i have in my head at the moment

and you know, i meant to answer when you first posted, and then forgot...so thanks for the reminder :) of course, my answers probably suck in terms of fitting into a mix

Trying to think of things less obvious (for me).....

1) "Morning Light" - Royal Crown Revue, and my old favorite "Good Morning Starshine" - Oliver

2) "Engel" - Rammstein for release

"Sing Along" - Blue Man Group featuring Dave Matthews for relaxation.

"Northshore Drive" - Jack Knife & The Sharps for recovery (Yes, it's a three-step process.)

3) "Boom" - Trinket, "New York City" - Moe Dither, "Beautiful World" - Colin Hay

4) "Baby It's Cold Outside" - Rod Stewart and Dolly Parton (best version ever), the "Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You a Swinging Christmas" album.....and the Squirrel Nut Zippers "Christmas Caravan" album, too.

5) So many different moods....."Say Yes" - Floetry, "Taste" - Lorna Vallings, "African Tango" - Adiemus

6) "Makambo" - Geoffrey Oryema (works every time), "El Reloj Cucu" - Mana, "Find the River" - REM
