Of Politics and Gary Gygax

Hey all.

Trying to stay warm as yet another 4+ inches of the white stuff enrobes the earth out my window.  I found out earlier today that Gary Gygax has passed on at the age of 69.  For those that don't know, he was one of the premier minds that created Dungeons and Dragons and with that, the entire Role-Playing Game genre as a whole.  I've dabbled ( Read more... )

If nothing else, Duck, this election is probably going to inspire a lot of people to come out and vote that haven't before. Depending on who the candidate is for the Democrats, they'll be coming out in support of their candidate (for Sen. Obama) or against the opposition's candidate (Republicans flocking in droves if Sen. Clinton gets the nod). In either case, I think this election is going to be about "Do we want more of the party that gave us George Bush, or do we want to send that fake cowboy's party back to their birthplace to lick their wounds and regroup?"

I hope this does get people to want to vote...but then again there is that fear of what'll happen when the People come across the machinations of government and feel the sting if, say, the Democratic Superdelegates decide to go against what the majority of the faithful feel should be and nominate the other.

Will we see something akin to Chicago in '68? The tearing of the party in '80 between Ted Kennedy and Jimmy Carter...leading Reagan to win?

That depends on how viciously Clinton and Obama decide to fight for their respective nomination. If it's an internal shredding, neither candidate will really have the stuff to stand up to the Republican war machine. That said, if Senator Clinton is chosen as the nominee, I have a bad feeling about her electability. This year could be a fracturing year for both parties - the Republicans are trying to hold together their coalition, while nominating a person who has cheesed off enough of the brass in the party as to make things potentially difficult, and the Democrats, who seem to have a hairline fracture in their coalition, with Obama's supporters generally trying to tug the party more to the left and Clinton's supporters trying to drag it more to the right ( ... )
