I grew up without my father. He chose to avoid the "entanglements" of family. The upshot was that I also grew up without my brother and two sisters (his via two other wives.... as flighty as Dad was, he had a rather old-fashioned sense that one had to be married, he just didn't like to STAY married). It also meant that I had no contact with his sisters and brother and a multitude of cousins

Yes, there are certainly a few parallels, Mudhooks. (Thanks for dropping by, too.) With my lot, I feel lucky that all the cousins were prepared to bide their time until two of the three sisters in the older generation were no longer around to create unpleasantness. I think it says something about my mother, too - she managed not to get tarred with the same brush as her mother, and the cousins thought her worth the effort after all these years...
My remaining great-aunt is no saint, and she's not totally innocent in the recurring feud, but she is less dogmatic than the other two. I'm looking forward to seeing her again - but we'd better be quick. She's 86, and not well.

I think that, with my grandmother gone, the last of that generation will be looking for peace and reconciliation herself.
Mind you, I won't be telling her about my grandmother's photo album. She took to it with a pair of scissors, you see, and edited her sisters out of her past - except in a couple of photos, and she must have left them because they were unflattering.
Perhaps... I've moved AGAIN (probably about three times, really), and I got your email that you have, too... I am just rotten at correspondence these days!
