Some Realizations

1. It occurred to me that one of the reasons that my Livejournalling became less and less frequent, even as far back as 2009, is that my work privacy was seriously curtailed and I couldn't make journal entries as quickly or as events were happening. By the time I got home, I either couldn't remember or things weren't really as important as they ( Read more... )

I had a very similar reading realization a few years ago. For as long a I could remember I had at least one book going and never went to sleep without reading first. And, like, you, one day I realized that it wasn't fun any more. it was a chore. So I stopped. It was so liberating!

In my case, I first found audio books and found that I really enjoyed them. I listen while I'm doing other things. And, I have also started reading again but only books I want and if they don't hold my interest, I stop.

Bon Voyage on your own discovery trip!

Audio books, huh? Thinking ....

I totally get the pride thing. I was kind of embarrassed. In my case it was exacerbated by my reviewing every book I read on my website. I had done it for years - how was I going to explain stopping?

It turned out that I didn't need to and by the time someone asked, I was all into not reading so it was fine to say that I had retired.

Audio books are so different. The reader of the book is a key ingredient that IRBs (my brother's phrase 'In Real Book) don't have.

But, I love 'em. I started listening when I had a long commute - they are GREAT for in the car/bus/train. My library has them for download and I have a subscription to audible.com.

I can empathize ... for a while, now, I've felt like middle age has been robbing me of the literary attention span I once had. But seeing the world itself almost always beats reading someone else's interpretation of it. :)
