I was surprised I saw it from you, which is why I clicked. Good on you.

Though it could be said it's "happy" in a thankful way because those men and women who gave their lives for our country allow us the ability to enjoy the freedoms we have and allow us the ability to thank them profusely for such. There are countries where the military actively oppresses their people, giving few to no freedoms.
So... I guess what I'm trying to say is that today doesn't have to be a downer. The important part is to be thankful and remember all the men and women who served our country and to support them and let them know we're thinking of them and wishing them a safe journey home.

Speaking as an outsider (Norwegian and all) on THIS particular holiday... There's certainly a place for somber reminiscence, speeches and suchlike. There needs to be dignity.

But at the same time... If you'd made a huge sacrifice for a good cause, wouldn't you want to be celebrated as well as mourned?

Not at the same time. That's what Independence Day (in the USA) is for, to celebrate our country's freedoms.
