On storms

Hurricane Agnes plowed across Pennsylvania when I was barely seven years old. I remember being terrified and crying as it started up and my mother having to comfort me to get me to go to sleep. Late in the night my sisters woke me up and said, "Come and see the hurricane." We sat in the living room of our little house and watched trees whipping ( Read more... )

The last MAJOR hurricane that came through Long Island was back in 1938.

We have had bad ones since then, but not like that.

What worries me now is all the 80 ft to 100 ft tall pine trees that have grown since that time.
As they have fairly shallow root systems another MAJOR hurricane could topple them.
There's a large one on the corner of our property, and another across the street.

We will probably loose power - that's almost a given with overhead lines and trees.
We have municipal water and gas, so we are OK there. The biggest problem will be the freezer and refrigerator.

Overall storms don't bother me. I get everything charged up ahead of time, and I have a pile of magazines and books to get through.

I can work without a 'net if I have to.

I remember Andrew, Orlando through the entire 2004 season, and a couple others. I got experience. :3
But yeah, I kinda share your sentiment of "neener neener". Heh.

I think the child daring the storm still resides in all of us, and he or she peeks out and makes faces when storms come through.
I know Charley, Jean and Frances didn't faze me. Not after a few active seasons where the storms would only pass by.
Almost passe.

While dashing about in thunderstorms with your chums, did you or any of them ever witness "Ball Lighting" (or "Kubelblitz" as the early German physicists dubbed the phenomenon)?
