Summary: Gabriel was hardly the fittest in the Darwinian sense.
Thousands of years of evolution and survival of the fittest remains the rule. It was simply a biological imperative that Sylar rise out of the dust that was once an unassuming watchmaker.
The authorities sought Sylar for murder, but for Gabriel to have used his talent for watchmaking was in itself criminal.
So Sylar became what Gabriel had always wanted to be, and allowed the other to give into a primeval urge.
The television clicked on and through intermittent signal he could hear, “The reward … leads to the capture of … ‘Sylar’ is $100,000.”
Gabriel was very special, indeed.
