So Clint's car has put putted it's last. Upon bringing it to the mechanic, we got asked "Does this car have any particular sentimental value?" Ut oh.....not a good start to the diagnosis.

Long story short the car would cost substantially more to fix than it's worth. Like, by more than double.

So today we did something neither of us have EVER done ( Read more... )

lol, read what you wanted in your FA journal. :P coming from someone who has spent a significant portion of the last year looking at cars for low budget options, I don't think you're going to find a newish, midsized car that gets 30 mpg for much less than you're looking at for that prius. :(

you may want to try looking for an older car, like 2004-2003-ish, with slightly lower mpg, since 30 is kinda up there with really nice cars. It'll open up the search so much wider. The car Ark and I just got is listed at something like 3, as it's a 2003, it's a little older, but it runs great and gets decent mileage, something like 20-25 mpg ( i don't know, I haven't gotten to drive it yet >:( )

Not that I really recommend a volvo ( 'spensive as anything to fix ),but I know my old volvo usually did 30 mpg, and it was a '93. So don't automatically write off older cars ;3

Oh no, I don't write them off at all! Older cars would be fine, but the mileage? We need at east what the Ford got. If we're spending $$$ each month for a car payment, we just can't afford to ALSO be paying more money for gas, esp. when driving to cons. It would kill any profits I make. And its sort of a chicken or the egg thing...the newer cars tend to get better mileage because it's what people demand.

Yyyyyyeah. Not so much on the Volvos, lol. My Hyundai is sooo much cheaper to upkeep on scheduled maintenance.

I honestly think we're going to do research and see if we can't get him lower. The price is uber inflated, and it was only their initial asking price.

It got 30 city? o-o I find that...quite surprising. since omg, that is crazy good. Our beast of a tank got 20 mpg, though, so I guess not too surprising. Honestly, tho, I think you'd be better off getting a lower priced car that gets more in the 22-25 range, and paying a LOT less per month ( and overall ) for it. especially if you're financing, they fucking rape you in charges. :(

Volvos reaaaaaalllllyyyyyyyyy suck for maintenance. :( do not recommend any more. but goddamn the old ones never die if you keep up with the maintenance. and they are amazing on gas. and they will win any fight. >) makes me so sad that we need to get rid of our bus ;=; the new car just does not compare in either tank-ness or in cool features like heated everything.

but hey, if you can talk him down on that prius, go for it. :P prius' are awesome. Personally, tho, I'm holding out for a smart car ;3 WHOOSH!

Yup. Remember though, it was 4 cyl, so not much power. Sometimes felt like we had to push it uphill if the car was loaded!
Though the Prius is only 4 cyl, but it feels a lot stronger. Much more Umph.

Oh man, Ursula's dad converted a car to Biodiesel. Fry-Moblie FTW!

I keep hoping they'll make a car like back to the future...runs on compost garbage. Banana peels to fuel my car? Wheee!

My parents got a Prius three years ago, it's so amazing, having driven in it with them when I visit them.

If it helps, they ended up surprised just how much they saved on gas, like they knew they would be saving, but it ended up being way more than they thought per month. And they've had zero issues with upkeep and the basic maintained has been on the low price end as well. I can say it's been worth the money they paid initially.

Yeah, I told Clint I had car lust, lol. We were in Ireland last time we saw gas mileage anywhere NEAR that good! (damn European cars get 50-60mpg!)

Good to know! I was worried the hybrids would be tricky to maintain, being newer technology. Will have to let him know.

I've found a few online that have dealerships close, and all of the asking prices are lower, plus the cars are newer. Will be breaking out the bargaining bat soon, lol.

Yeah, I think both of them were surprised at that part too, just don't get in any accidents, I hear that actually fixing major damage to a hybrid can be killer, but the yearly upkeep is relatively low over all.

Lots of luck in the search, I think you two can really put a strong bargaining card on the table with enough research, and end up with a good deal.

Thank you!

Yeah, I just found one in Branford for almost 3k less, has 2k plus fewer miles on it, and is 2 years newer. Plus it's pretty and blue. <3
So checking that out tomorrow.

Will let ya both/all know how it goes!
