Is there a Soul Eater anime going on? While not Bleach, its manga was pretty bad for introducing new characters as a replacement for continuing to write stories about the existing character. Supposedly the author once said that he had to keep introducing new characters to keep coming up with story ideas.
Almost sadly, one of the manga that most holds my interest these days is One Piece, even though it has story arcs that never seem to end and suffers the same power-up issues that most battle manga suffer. Funny thing is, some of those arcs have been good. Plus, the author tends to *remember* characters that were written out years previously. (And the story has been running for so long that Luffy is constantly running into old characters, or friends of old characters.)
"Filler" does not even begin to describe the transcendent page wasting techniques Kubo has unleashed upon the world. Dog food has filler. Twinkies have filler. Hot dogs have filler. What Bleach has is something more.
And yes, the lack of likeable females- or rather, lack of focus on likeable females- is the real crushing blow from my point of view.
But what bugs the shit out of me is that somewhat better series (Naruto) get all the fan hate, and FAR better series, with similar concepts (Shaman King) get dragged out back and shot. The gross imbalances baffle and disgust me to no end.
