The Parasite of Monsters

So I kind of want to do a little research project on the evolution of vampire myth and popular conception. Because I still like the conceptual idea of vampires in spite of what Twilight has done to them, and the fact that they're ~*~TRENDY~*~ now ( Read more... )

Well, I meant "as opposed to the Twilight 'vampires'" which are really fairies.

I don't mind some of the humanizing... like the prettifying is okay, traces back to Bram Stoker and all. The Twilightpires are their own ballpark of stupid, mostly because they're barely even rooted in the actual cultural evolution of vampires and constitute just a bunch of shit that SMeyer made up off the top of her head.

But the general pop culture conception of vampires pre-Twilight I don't mind so much. Yeah, I get that. I mean, the whole series seems to be rife with religious overtones and pushing traditional values--abstinence before marriage, submissive women havin' babies, etc.

To say nothing of the pedophile werewolf being in love with Bella's child. That's it's own can of worms right there.

But this isn't a Twilight rant, really, so I digress.

I'm just interested in seeing where each element of the modern vampire mythos came into the picture. I really wish I still had that Frankenstein paper because I really thoroughly pinpointed during what eras the creature lost his reason, lost his voice, where Igor came into the picture, etc...
