The Forest of the Dead separates the city itself from the River Lethe. It's a thick forest that seems to go on forever, which is a fallacy, it is possible to reach the river Lethe through the forest, it's just an exceptionally hard journey. The edge of the forest is home to fairly weak poltergeists that will occasionally wander into the city itself. As you go deeper into the forest the poltergeists become more powerful and more of them arrive, as you venture even further into the forest you'll discover various mythical beasts trying to kill you.
The Poltergeists
The poltergeists can take many forms, including male or female forms, most have some sort of power, such as the ability to manipulate fire or move faster than you can see. There are some female poltergeists that have traits similar to that of a siren, they have the ability to call to men and manipulate them using their voices. These entities are made up of purely malicious energy and their only goal is your suffering. They're all strong in their own right but their strength increases the deeper you go.

They have both incorporeal and corporeal forms, there are several ways to make them take their corporeal forms in order to vanquish them though salt is your best bet. Pure salt that has no additives to it will cause them to become stuck temporarily in their corporeal forms. These entities can't actually be killed but they can be vanquished for a short time. If you kill them they will re-spawn within a few hours, which would give you plenty of time to get away from harms way.

The Creatures

The deeper you go into the forest the more you'll end up encountering. Once you reach the middle of the forest and beyond you'll begin to encounter various mythical beasts. These beasts can be anything you can think of including harpies, centaurs, basilisks, and manticore. You're free to make-up any mythological creature you can think of to be in the forest as long as it's not HUGE such as a hydra. There are also creatures from people's homeworlds located in the forest. For some idea of what to look for look here!

It's possible to get to the river Lethe if you're skilled enough or if you go in a group with others and work together.
