[Meh, she'll get right down to it.] I've heard people call it Hell, Hades, and the Underworld. Whatever it's called, it's a pretty well-built city in the middle of nowhere.

Afraid I don't have much more than that.

[And that's the best explanation he's heard since he woke up on the boat.]

Ain't got much use for cities, well-built or otherwise. If I wanted them, I'd've stayed closer to the core worlds with the gorram Alliance.

[She does what she can.

But that's a curious bit of info he gives.] More of a rural soul, then?

[He grunts.]

Rural's easier. Less complicated, less crap to deal with. Ain't got no use for fancy cities or their fancy laws.

[Her genial expression doesn't budge, although her eyes might shift just slightly at that laws bit.] You speak like a true outlaw.

[...And she's sure it's just a coincidence, but...] You said 'Alliance.' Is that something important?

Ain't no outlaw. Mercenary. There's a difference.

[Ok, not really. But 'outlaw' seems to mean 'hi, please help us by solving our problems and not taking any loot when you do'. Which attracted Mal more often than not. Not Jayne.]

Not when you're out on the Border planets. Alliance ain't got much use for colonists, mudders and Browncoats.

[Well, considering she's a mercenary and part of her own law-abiding alliance, she'd agree that there is indeed a difference there. So she does.] You have a point there.

[Ah, not her Alliance, after all.] I get the feeling we're getting back to that "coming from separate worlds" issue. [Then, a bit sympathetically,] You'll run into that a lot here.

[Jayne's now heard it enough that it's shockingly starting to sink in.]

Right. Not just different planets, been to plenty of those. These are places where nothin's the same.

[Her voice lowers slightly.] Tell me about it. Space travel's in its infancy, more or less, where I come from -- compared to some of what I hear, anyway. The idea of inhabiting other planets is still the stuff of science fiction.

Mm. Must be from Earth-that-was or somethin like that. [Which is exactly the span of his understanding of history] Alliance is on the inner core. You live there, you live their way. I ain't got no use for that or them kinda rules.

[Well, that's a little disconcerting, to think her world's a part of someone's past.] Well, you're the first one I've heard mention that Alliance. I doubt its influence reaches here at all.

[A beat.] Jill Valentine, by the way.

[And the idea of time travel is vague enough not to completely freak out the lummox. At least yet.]

Good. Too much law, too much control for me.

Jayne Cobb.
