It's an easy trap to fall into, the "Jesus + tradition" bit. I'd be hesitant to call Christianity religion, though ;-D Next time you see this speegle person, suggest he check a few chapters of Galatians -- Paul warning against preaching a "Jesus and" gospel (so to speak), such as where converted Jews were teaching that one needed to receive forgivenness of Christ AND follow Jewish rules wherby correcting them that it's Jesus only, not Jesus and ;-D
And perhaps remind the must-be-baptized speakers about the criminal on the cross -- who was not baptized. Every person is already "born of water" when they are physically born from their mother. The pastor for West Side Baptist here in WF put it well -- when he was telling some kids about what baptism was, he pointed to a picture of an eagle on his wall and asked them what it was. "An eagle" they replied. "No, that is a picture of an eagle -- it is not actually an eagle," and remarked that baptism is only an outward expression of being saved, but doesn't mean you actually are :-)
