Horses for courses

This is just an ordinary quiz round, themed to reflect the topical interest in Tesco's burgers. (Well, it was topical a few days ago when I wrote the questions. No doubt it'll be completely forgotten by the time I actually run the quiz in a few weeks' time…)

Poll I've filled it in myself with the correct answers, so if you have a look after you've ( Read more... )

Sounds like you need to find some horsey teammates, pronto (like the Lone Ranger found Tonto).

Or should that be: like the Lone Ranger found Silver?

There's always one neigh-sayer.

I'd say dick3 and apocalypse are the only really easy ones (for a pub team). The others are all pretty specific knowledge.

Mm, it's beginning to look as though my own knowledge of such things, which I thought pretty rudimentary, may be unrepresentative.

Oh I dunno - all the more general less horse-specific ones have got a clear majority of correct answers, and everyone seems to have known Equus for some reason. But the horsey ones are genuinely tough and the problem is that apart from Red Rum, they're not guessable - the hands, and the regiments and especially the chestnuts are what are known in our household as "Three apples" questions, as that is our default answer to any University Challenge question that is beyond us.

I'll give a point for the hands for being fairly close, and the chestnuts I think people will have fun guessing a name even if they don't know. The regiments one is more problematic, though, seems likely to just be frustrating: looks like I'll have to switch that.

It occurs to me very belatedly that I really blew it in strategic terms on Q1. The correct play given that I don't know the answer is to name every year from 1800 to 2013 just to be sure of my half point!

Heh, yes, I'd spotted that needed fixing thanks to ar_gemlad's comment (although she was coming at it from the other direction).

Assuming the apolocalypse (oops, nice typo though) gets one point for all four correct I'm moderately pleased with 4/10

The four horsemen of teh Ap0Lolcata!ypse is from a different sort of quiz.

The horsemen of the apocalypse question threw me - I knew they were pestilence etc, but as you asked for names I assumed they must also have actual names that I wasn't aware of!

My horsey knowledge is apparently not great. My knowledge of plays in which Daniel radcliffe has appeared naked, however, is excellent.

Mm, I think I might need to make a few of the questions a bit less horsey. (But probably not any more naked-Radcliffe-y, sorry.)
