ya, names like Jeremy Clarke are so much better because of their simplicity.
i am offended if not only because i am one of those contaminated hyphenated child.
as for my children, they don't need to carry on my double last name, they can keep it simple OR they can choose one of the "takee/mckeda" fusions... that would be a bit ridiculous, but in any case i am a takeda-mckee, the only one in fact (as far as i know) and i wouldn't have it any other way.

but are you really going to let small children choose their name? and if you wait even until they are in high school the name they use until then will cause problems if you change it. I mean, we can let all children choose whatever name they want when they grow up and they can legally change it, but shouldn't we keep it as simple as possible until then? It's not just one big unique name, it still breaks socially down into to units of lastnameness and creates a mess.

I seriously have trouble identifying people with two last names sometimes, they're all over the freakin' place.

ok, i was obviously joking when i said that my kid can choose one of my fusion version last names... as for kids choosing their names in general, ya that's obviously impossible to do without complication, and i don't suggest it.

I suppose hyphens do just solidify that name as a unit making it hard to break down and makes it so that the junk is carried on for generations... so i guess this just adds reasons to my list of why i don't want kids. but admitting that accidents happen, if i do have kids, i'll just give them the father's last name and i will remain the one and only takeda-mckee.

although i do kind of like the idea of acronymns, perhaps. haha.

in all seriousness though, quit ragging on my two last names. they're awesome and you're just jealous.

you know I love your last names and the cultural implications (like how the initials TM totaly convey even without clarification, which initial is japanese and which irish).

i wasn't ragging on your last name specifically anyway. It's the whole trend that's a problem, and especially when people have two first names as well and one of them is hyphenated, it's ridiculous.

I still don't quite get why you're all hassels about the hypenation. I always secretly wished for a nice simple last name instead of my joint thirteen letters with a conveniently placed dash, but I certainly wouldn't consider it a plague. I mean, a kid in my high school graduating class was named Clément Alexandre David Leduc-Robert de Massy, but he just went by Alex and left it at that.
