❝After an absolutely exhausting week of tests, Julian did exactly what he had set his mind out to do that very first day of testing. He went out to a particularly shady tree that sat at the top of a slight incline, a really picturesque kind of place that you wanted to keep to yourself.❞
06:夢と現の間/ the space between dream and reality
Sometimes, though she was reluctant to admit to the experience, Laura dreamed. Many times, they were unpleasant dreams about the Weapon Plus Facility, about Kimura’s tortures and her assignments that she only had twenty-two minutes to complete. Other times, they were about her aunt and cousin, and the brief happiness that she experienced with them before her reality caught up to her again.
Most recently, however, those dreams were about Julian Keller. These were the dreams that she enjoyed the most, though she did not understand them. The dreams ranged from spending a normal day with him to doing things with him that she had not done since she had worked under Zebra Daddy. Those latter dreams were what confused her the most, though she assumed, logically, that they were a psychological reaction that could be considered normal considering their age and environment.
Laura did not enjoy, however, when the space between dream and reality closed itself very thin, because it meant that she felt like butterflies were trying to escape from the pit of her stomach whenever she saw him.
07:スーパースター/superstar
One of the things that Laura admired (but also did not understand) about Julian was his blatant overconfidence in every task that he decided to take on, whether it be ice hockey, basketball, or even karaoke.
Truth be told, he was actually a very good singer, something that, while he initially blamed on his childhood nanny for putting him in the school choir (his cheeks flushed red with embarrassment when he told that story, and it ended with a “Stop laughing, Foley!”), gave him that boost of overconfidence that made him so fitting of his codename.
By the end of the night, he was convinced that, even though he’d messed up on the lyrics to half of the songs, he would be a superstar someday. The world’s second (he did admit defeat to Dazzler in getting there first) mutant music star.
“But Julian,” Laura pointed out, breaking up a round of applause for his almost-perfect performance of some song from the 80’s, “Did you not say last week that you were going to be the world’s first mutant basketball star?”
Julian looked at her, both puzzled and amused that she had remembered a detail like that.
“What, can’t I be both?”
“Logically-”
“Logically, no, I can’t, but I can do anything I put my mind to. So look out, world, because here comes the first ever mutant music-slash-basketball star!”
08:二人の世界 /our own world
After an absolutely exhausting week of tests, Julian did exactly what he had set his mind out to do that very first day of testing. He went out to a particularly shady tree that sat at the top of a slight incline, a really picturesque kind of place that you wanted to keep to yourself.
The conditions were perfect, too. A sunny day with a blue sky and only a few thin, white clouds. Not too hot, not too cold, with that little bit of a breeze.
Just like he used to do back at his house in California, Julian went up to his tree and climbed up, eager to take his favorite spot, on a thick branch with his back against the trunk of the tree…
Only to find that it was already occupied by a sleeping Laura Kinney.
Any other day, he’d wake her up and shoo her away from his secret napping spot that had been a safe haven for him when he was trying to get out of Mr. Summers’ tests and Miss Frost’s lectures. In fact, he was sorely tempted to do just that… but he remembered seeing her hunched over her desk just like the rest of them, looking like a normal teenager instead of the killing machine that they all made her out to be.
So he let her rest, taking up another (not quite as comfortable) spot in the tree so that he too could doze off in their own little secret world.
09:ダッシュ / dash
This was a day of running around. Everyone in the Institute was running around like a chicken with their head cut off, trying to find missing items and clean everything up before Spring Break began, so that they could possibly get the vacation that the staff had been hinting about with an increasing frequency.
Julian was in hot pursuit of a t-shirt that he was almost sure he’d seen Josh walking around wearing, and with shared laundry arrangements, that was not an impossibility. There were so many students there, and when several of them were around the same size, it was pretty frequent that there were laundry mix-ups.
On his way to hunt the golden boy down, Julian dashed by Laura, who was helping Cessily to clean out her room. With his mind running a mile a minute, it was safe to say that he wasn’t thinking straight, and…
“Hi, Laura! Bye, Laura! See you later, I love you!” The words barreled out of his mouth before he could stop them, and he even finished the hurried greeting with a kiss to her cheek before darting off again.
Laura stopped, arms full of old magazines, and felt the blush creeping up on her cheeks. She stared, quite blankly, at the wall opposite her, before going back out to the recycling bin.
She could not help but think, deep down somewhere in her heart, that he missed with that kiss.
