Because they're taking the money that is supposed to be put into a production, that SHOULD be refunded or payed to the house they played and for loyalties and the sort, but because no one is paying attention they can run off with all of the remaining starting profit, and no one knows because they expect little profit.
What they do is a form of embezzlement, which is illegal. What they intend to do is take a ton of money for funding their show and deliberately put on a cheap, short-lived show that doesn't use anywhere near the amount of the little old ladies' investments so that they can keep the leftover money for themselves.
Well...that's sorta true, but there's more to it. We learned about it in theatre class last semester, but I can't remember it. They're buying shares of the show or something...and they sell more than 100% of the show, but I can't figure out how much money the little old ladies would be owed per share. x.x
