Pain. Painpainpainpain. She's so tired, she just wants to go to sleep, but someone's slapping her face. With a whimper, Sarah forces her eyes open and sees Nick staring down at her, speaking. She can't hear him, his voice too desperate and muffled. There are tears in his eyes. Why are you crying? she wants to ask, because in the entire time she's been with him, she's only even seen him cry when Matthew was born. “Nick?” She murmurs softly, all she can manage.
It takes her a minute, but she finally sees the blood. It's everywhere, like someone took a bucket and threw it around. How could she have not seen it when she first opened her eyes?
Someone broke in, she realizes, remembers. That's why I hurt, he stabbed me.
“Stay with me,” Nick begs her, voice choked and cracking. His tears mingle with the blood on her skin.
Sarah thinks back, trying to remember. She'd been... Nick was out with his cousin for a birthday, she'd stayed home with the baby. Sat up until one am watching reruns, then Matthew started crying on the baby monitor.
Matthew...
“Matthew,” she chokes out. She'd gone upstairs to pick him up, to feed him when the downstairs door opened. She thought it had been Nick, hadn't even blinked until an unfamiliar voice spoke from somewhere behind her.
Nick presses their sheets into her injuries and makes her hold them in place as he runs to their son's room. She can hear his cry of grief and she closes her eyes against the overwhelming despair. Her son was dead and she was half on her way, but she couldn't leave Nick. Couldn't let him lose her too.
Oh, Nick. She can hear sirens, but she can't open her eyes. Sarah tries to, but she just needs to rest a moment.
