so i have my own room and job now in portland, and i opened a new bank account south of the [canadian] border, making me i suppose a bonafide resident of portland, oregon, USA. my room is temporary, its essentially a glorified closet that you have to duck to fit in with a window and a bed and 1 electrical outlet (2 prong not 3) with a broken ( Read more... )

if you'll read my entry a little closer you'll see that the paragraph you refer to is not a sweeping inditement of seattle but rather a discussion of the modern architecture there. i said i enjoyed the city but then mused about the sort of duality of having nice modern buildings. i'd certainly invite you to go to any new condo building in any city in america and knock on the door and i'd be willing to bet that the dude that answers the door will more than likely fit more or less into that description. that goes for nice new condos in philadelphia, the northwest side of portland, anywhere. Thats just a kind of thing about big cities, on the surface their skylines are aesthetically pleasing, but when one considers a little deeper the implications of those monuments to capitalism they don't seem so pretty anymore. Don't be so defensive and personal attacks really don't ever achieve anything except polarize people.

i think i am just trying to say that by seeing the buildings you are talking about-which are in every city-and saying you appreciate the place you live in which is the same exact thing is just kind of ridiculous. even portlands little buildings make a nice skyline but i know its not the thing that makes it up, like the seattle skyline which is all those buildings and i understand what you are saying about it.

a quick wikipedia search tells me that PDX's actual population rests at roughly half a mil, while Seattle's metropolitan area population is clocking in at 3.3 mil. a really cool thing about portland is that the city council has passed sprawl control zoning laws that ensure that city remains small and doesn't become some kind of metropolis, factor in this fact with the rivers carving the city up and one gets a very unique urban environment. living on the east side is kind of like the "wrong side of the tracks" squares stick to their side of the willamette and gangly 20 something white people can sip their espressos and check pitchfork media in peace on ours. I'm not arguing that one city is better than the other at all, nor am i in any position to, i'm just kind of clarifying my statements that portland would be my preference simply because of its drastically smaller size and not-so-subtle business district/non business district dichotomy that, in my experience with similarly sized american cities, is very unique. i hesitate to invoke ( ... )
