The moment I make a list of what needs to be done, obviously I begin to procrastinate. And as those of you who've been with me through University know, that means fics, nine times out of ten.
For the record, I'm probably about as firmly on the Kendappa/Souma side of the fence as I am on the Kurogane/Fai side, but that's never stopped me before *shrug*
For my long, long outstanding claim at
1sentence Fandom: Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
Pairing: Kurogane/Souma
Theme Set: Epsilon
Rating: up to PG-13
Notes: spoilers up to and including manga chapter 125; mostly completed (and forgotten about, accidentally) prior to the events in Ceres, so many of these have to be considered AU. I'm not rewriting them. It's just not happening.
01: motions
In Nihon, the days continue on as they had before Kurogane was sent away, though Souma only goes through the motions in his absence.
02: cool
As the temperature drops, she finds herself slipping into Kurogane's room more often than usual, hiding from the cool air in his warmth.
03: young
When they were only children, Souma had thought Kurogane to have exceptional skill, but little self-control, and as they grew into adulthood, her opinion didn't change.
04: last
The day before Tomoyo sent him away was spent crossing swords in the practice yard before collapsing into bed without so much as touching each other and Souma wonders how the day would have been different had they known it would be their last together.
05: wrong
Souma knows it isn't right for her to consort with a comrade-in-arms, let alone one as brutish as Kurogane, but it seems that every time they meet, her body moves of its own accord and she falls before she can catch herself.
06: gentle
The first time they drink together, Kurogane is pleased to learn that gentle, proper Souma has an angry, rebellious side to her that he'd never previously seen.
07: one
Tomoyo mentioned once the idea that there was only one match for every person in every world as she cheerfully noted the sidelong glances that passed between Kurogane and Souma when each thought the other wasn't looking.
08: thousand
Souma marks each day of Kurogane's absence on the wall in her room with diligence, as certain he'll return on the thousandth day as she had been on the first.
09: king
Souma couldn't help but be impressed when, after much prodding, Kurogane arrived to court well-dressed and respectful with all the dignity of a king just to prove that he could.
10: learn
Tomoyo says she sent Kurogane away to learn about true strength, a lesson Souma agrees he needs, though she can't help but wish there were another way to teach it.
11: blur
The first time Kurogane was brought to the practice yard, he was quickly distracted by the blur of tan skin, dark hair and glinting metal whose name he later learned was Souma.
12: wait
Kurogane hated waiting, but patience was something he learned while on his journey, though he was sure it was not the lesson that had been intended.
13: change
At first, the relative quiet of the palace without Kurogane was a welcome change, but as the days passed, Souma began to long for his loud voice and colourful language.
14: command
When Tomoyo finally reveals her new female uniform, dragging Souma, her red-faced model, in front of the gathered crowd, Kurogane finds himself grinning, and for once he can't help but appreciate Tomoyo's unusual commands.
15: hold
When he'd lived in Nihon, he'd thought sentimentality to be pointless, but now he wishes he had some memento of her - some small thing to hold in his palm and help him to remember.
16: need
Most of the women of the castle express their sympathies that sweet Souma should find herself involved with such a violent man, but Tomoyo only smiles knowingly, as though she thinks Kurogane's just what Souma needs.
17: vision
Whenever Tomoyo sleeps, Souma watches over her, simultaneously afraid and hopeful that the Dreamseer will dream of Kurogane.
18: attention
When Kurogane returns, he is much more attentive than he had been before he left, as though the time and distance made him reevaluate the importance of things in his life.
19: soul
The first time he met someone with her soul, he outright dropped the injured mage, partly out of surprise and partly due to the illogical concern that she'd get the wrong idea.
20: picture
As days turn into months turn into years, the picture she has of him in her mind begins to fade and she nearly begins to panic as she realizes she's starting to forget.
21: fool
The worry clings to the back of her mind that perhaps she's been a fool to wait for him, but the near-desperate embrace she receives upon his return makes her realize she has instead been a fool for doubting him.
22: mad
He's only seen Souma mad once, not just angry, but truly mad with anger, and he's never seen anything more beautiful.
23: child
Kurogane never had patience for children before he left, but after his return Souma often finds him in the training yard teaching the children of the castle swordplay and wishes she could have met the young travellers that left such an imprint.
24: now
Kurogane's always been goal-oriented, first to match his father's strength, then to match Souma's, then to be the strongest of all, and now to find a way home, even if it means learning of this "true strength" Tomoyo sent him to find.
25: shadow
Beneath the immediate joy of return, Souma can already sense the shadows his journey has left lurking within him and wonders how much he's truly changed.
26: goodbye
Under the circumstances of his departure, there was no chance to properly say goodbye, and somehow that's all the more reason he needs to make it back.
27: hide
The man she sees now is brutish and arrogrant and angry, but Souma can still see the parts he keeps hidden as she remembers a young boy kneeling before his mother and sobbing on the edge of madness.
28: fortune
Tomoyo says it's good fortune that brought them to Kurogane, and though she doesn't say so, Souma feels more as though it were fate.
29: safe
Bloody and broken, he pushed into the medical tent, much more concerned with her well-being after the battle than with his own.
30: ghost
The feral grin was common enough, but it was the rarer, ghost of a smile that made Souma feel priviledged.
31: book
He hands her a pile of books in various media, with seemingly only the title Maganyan in common, saying nothing more than, "I thought you'd like them."
32: eye
Kurogane returns with a pale, one-eyed vampire in tow, and it never occurs to Souma to consider the blond a threat to her princess, based solely on the company he keeps.
33: never
They weren't just travelling through worlds, but also through time, and Kurogane finds himself wondering if he misphrased his wish upon realizing that returning to Nihon did not necessarily meant returning to the people who made it home.
34: sing
Even when prompted while rambunctiously drunk, Kurogane couldn't be persuaded to sing and Souma couldn't help but smile to herself, recalling him humming to himself as he dressed that very morning.
35: sudden
His banishment from Nihon is so sudden that only hours later, sitting in an unfamiliar place across from an unfamiliar man with an unfamiliar smile does it hit him that he may never see her again.
36: stop
The third time Kurogane was spoken to, Tomoyo's patience was thinning and Souma wanted nothing more than to shake him by the shoulders and tell him to stop before the princess did something drastic.
37: time
He'd always treated her as though they had their entire lives together to get things right, and it's only after it's too late that he sees how short-sighted he'd been.
38: wash
She cleans out his injuries with more force than strictly needed, more than a little angry with him for getting hurt fighting yet another unnecessary battle.
39: torn
He thrusts the new tunic at her with all the awkwardness of youth, trying to make amends for the one he'd carelessly ruined on the practice grounds that morning and, despite herself, Souma is touched.
40: history
He asks the boy why it is he's so enamoured with history and archaeology and the only he answer he receives is, "Because the past make us the people we are," and the man's never heard anything more true.
41: power
He looks at the meat bun and can hardly believe that such a tiny, insignificant, annoying thing is the only one in the universe that holds the power to return him home.
42: bother
She tries to convince him to show proper respect to the princess, as his position in the court demands, and somehow she's certain he only continues his inappropriate behaviour in order to get under her skin.
43: god
Kurogane doesn't believe in the gods of this world, but the kid wants to visit the shrine and the princess wants to dress up and the meat bun insists they bring offerings and the mage teasingly chastises him for being difficult, so he goes along and prays for her well-being, just to shut them up.
44: wall
He disarms her and pins her wrists to the wall, effectively ending their scuffle, so Souma starts a new one by twisting upwards and wrapping her legs around his waist.
45: naked
Afterwards, lying very naked in her bed next to a very naked Kurogane, she's certain she should regret her actions, but can't seem to muster up the feeling.
46: drive
It is rare for Souma to truly let go, as her duties lay mostly within the castle; it is only when sparring with Kurogane, she finds, that she's truly driven to fight to her full potential.
47: harm
Eventually he learns, reassuringly, that Souma isn't delicate, for no matter how rough they are in the evening, her tan skin leaves no signs of harm the morning after.
48: precious
They're very similar, the man and the boy: both have the heavy air of one who's lost something precious, and both have the steeled look of one determined to get it back.
49: hunger
After all her teasing earlier that evening, he can't help but eye her from across the dinnertable, his hunger not the type to be sated by food.
50: believe
As he sinks into the ground shouting profanities and threats, he looks past Tomoyo to Souma with the promise in his eyes that he'll be back, and she believes him.
