Catcher in the CRAP

I read "Catcher in the Rye". I dont understand why this book is deemed a "classic". Maybe i'm interpretting it wrong? Im up for someone enlightening me if im missing it

It allows you to look into the perspective of someone who you normally could not understand why they act a certain way.

but there was no story, or perspective. just constant, needless whining.
