yeah... (SUNN O))) plays microtonal music. that just basically means their progressions are measured in hertz, and not pitches, necessarily. When I saw them they played a pitch at like... 55khtz or something like that, and they modulated around the pitch in microsteps... 56, 57, 53, etc. Theoretically, it creates a thing called a "standing wave." now i'm not thoroughly educated in this wave theory, so i'm not going to try to explain what i think it is, but i know it waas first done in the 70s by some hippie that my roommate's boyfriend knows of. all ask him when i see him next and try to gather some resources for you, if you're interested.
disclaimer: i may be making (SUNN O))) out to be more than they really are. they may not have a clue about any of this and they're just metal heads that like to play one long, loud pitch. it feeds my fantasy to think that they are musical scientists. it keeps me from thinking that they are the biggest load of bullshit in the northwest.
