As it turned out, he'd been wrong. But as he stumbled along, the wind pushing and pulling on him, depending how he turned his body, he realized it hadn't been all that bad to go out, as there was clearly somebody female in the river.
Tripping over to the river, he leaned closer, asking, "Sorry, missy, whatcha doin' in the river? Shouldn't ya be inside with ya boyfriend, makin' him keep ya warm?"

When she looked up she could see a silhouette of a man standing on the bank, but she couldn't tell who he was, beyond having an American accent, which didn't really narrow it down much.
At least the bank wasn't big or steep, which was probably how she came to have gone into the river in the first place. It meant she could walk up it. Well, crawl up, since she was determined not to be blown back in again. As soon as her feet were out of the water her boots squelched horribly. "I really liked these boots as well. The clothes box is never going to forgive me."

This goddamned wind! Johnny stumbled another step forward, nearly knocking her over again. "Sorry," he apologized, steading himself by planting his feet widely apart.

She took his hand, although since hers was wet, a bit muddy and starting to go numb from the cold, and he stumbled, it wasn't that useful. But she did manage to stand and then she could see who it was.
"Johnny!" Why was it he always saw her looking her worst?
