In the school of numerology that I learned, 0 is the root of 5, and both numbers are controlled by the Sun, though both numbers have different characteristics. I've forgotten about the characteristics of 5, but I do remember 0.
I guess numerology is very much an art. We must first see which numbers are pertinent and then decipher the significant ones. To reduce or not reduce is also important.
If one chooses to reduce to their singular digits, http://www.spiritlink.com/numbmean.html gives a fairly simple account. Note that it chooses a different interpretation of 10 (= 1 instead of 0) I do see that what you were taught has similarities to the Chinese Metaphysics interpretations of 1 though 10 though.
I pondered whether reducing the sums further would make sense, but felt it was best to leave it be. When you see a number repeating, you should probably pay attention to it, I think. So 14 is still the pertinent number to analyse here. Anyway, I think I found the answer. See next post

1414 = 1 + 4 + 1 + 4 = 10 = 0. (not 1)

0 signifies death, birth, destruction, creation, change.
