You know I just said yesterday that I set the comment permissions on this journal to "Friends ONLY"?

Well, it doesn't work.  I got fresh comment spam twelve minutes ago from J Random Never Fucking Heard Of Before.

Sooooooooo close to deleting this account altogether and going just with my Dreamdwidth journal.  (Which I seldom update any more ( Read more... )

I'm not "friends only" but I do have it so all non-friends have to do a captcha to comment & that killed all the spam traffic for me.

I seem to recall that that setting only applies to new posts after you change the setting.
You have to do something else (don't recall what) to get the setting retroactively applied to all existing posts.

So, if the new spam came as a comment on an old post, that might be why.

And since ALL the commentspam is on old posts where they think the poster won't notice....

What puzzles me is why the frell they think anyone but the journal owner is ever going to see their spam.

The individual who posts the spam probably doesn't care if anyone but you sees it or not - they are probably getting paid just for volume of posts. Post a hundred times a day, get $10. It would make sense for whomever is behind it to confirm the viability of the postings, but that would take time and cost extra money. So, as long as they can confirm a certain number of new links back to their site, they pay. Just a guess.
