There's a way to install comments functionality on a tumblr! I was working on the upcoming reboot of the good old Symposium blog today, and since the commenting system there seemed a bit clunky, I decided to try out Disqus. Disqus is a free commenting service widely used on blogs that lets people comment with their Twitter, Facebook, Google, and ( Read more... )

Just want to say, thank you so much for this! I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm going to really soon. It's a brilliant solution and you're right, it's so much better to leave public feedback. Your commenting powers continually amaze me. When I see something I like, I have to fight to get enough thoughts in a row to go beyond "hey, cool story!.

A couple of people swung by on the DW version of this post to explain that apparently disqus used to be quite widely used on Tumblr three or four years back, but it fizzled out when Tumblr introduced more ways for people to interact.

My commenting powers usually stem from very selfish reasons. It's in my best interest to make people pumped into writing more ;) Also, I tend not to be able to shut up about the things I really love. It's not always good.

Ah, those tumblr people, so lazy. I don't get it. Why wouldn't one want to gush over the things they love in a way that can reach the author?

I guess the Tumblr shift in conversation methods didn't happen because the people didn't want to talk to each other, but because as the commenters on the crosspost point out, a commenting thing like Disqus had some key disadvantages that kept it from being adopted en masse. Especially the "comments don't appear on the dash" thing.
