Floral Arragements

So one of my projects i wanted to do was put together something for designing flower arragements for the people in the hort building. Here is what i came up with, its just a starter

The scaling and stuff is neat, but the stems become problematic. Is there a way to have them automatically hidden by the floral images (if they are there)? or some sort of leveling thing?

actually the facutly who i am working with it, wanted all the flowers to have stems, and wanted the ones that were on there to be LONGER. I am going to be using this as part of my masters project (yes finally going to finish it). If you want to change the level of the object, you have to click on it, and it will bring it to the front. At some point i could put a scroll bar on the side where you could slide it up and down to change the layer order.
