ipod trouble

so i was wondering if anyone has had this problem with their ipod...
your ipod decides to be real smooth and when you turned it on one day all your music was just gone...but when you looked at the settings in the "about" file it said their was 16.5 GB out of 18.4 GB left, meaning your music was somewhere in the ipod but was not being reached.

hmm
mine says its used like 18.3 out of 18.4 gb, but i only have about 13 gb worth of music on there. i dont konw what the deal is, but i keep having to delete old stuff to put new stuff. its really gay.

intresting...so you cant keep your old music on the ipod while your adding new music? like does it remove the old files by itself?
