Let's say you step on a nail. Ouch. You go to the doctor, the doctor takes a look at the wound and explains that - uhoh - the wound is gangrenous. Simply pulling out the nail isn't enough - either your foot is amputated or you risk losing the whole leg. Terrified, you agree to this drastic procedure, trusting the wisdom of your physician. Actually, the gangrene wasn't really the reason for amputating your foot, it was to remove the terrible nail. That was clear from the very beginning.

Removing the foot being the only logical way of dealing with the nail. Of course. :-)
