In South America, they make small wickerman or poppets that are tossed into the fire at midnight. Burned in effigey!! You are supposed to read off a list as it burns all the bad luck that happened in the past year to rid yourself of it for the New Year. 2 years ago we did this and a few other traditions. It was hysterical between eating the grapes under a table, and throwing 12 pennies, etc. Midnight was a fluster of activity.

Oh, in Columbia they make a life size dummy stuffed with newpaper and firecrackers and set him afire in the middle of the street. I really would like to do this one!
