Thinking about it , maybe even I would have done exactly what you did. Avoided a confrontation, just moved away till it disappeared. It was an interesting read and Emma was quite a character.

There's so much honesty in this, about the imperfection of relationships and the people in them. Given your past with Emma, and the odd parts that remained in adulthood, I'm not surprised you didn't believe her. Part of that borderline personality is attention-seeking behavior, and part of schizophrenia is believing things that only exist in your own head.
I am sorry she got cancer, though, and hope having her Dad near was a comfort to her.
It was only much later I realised that she was lonely, too; more acquaintances basically meant more politics, not more friendship. This was a fascinating insight on what it can be like to be that "other more popular person" for some. It never would have occurred to me, but I think there's a lot of truth in it.
